Sheets can help ensure hygiene and comfort, but they do little for warmth. When the climate cools down most people need a blanket to rest on top of their top-sheet; a comforter is one type of blanket that is made up of either natural or synthetic filling, quantified in terms of intended warmth, and covered in a quilted shell constructed of fabrics such as cotton, silk, polyester or blends.

Custom pillow cases, like comforters, are commonly filled with natural materials like cotton, wool, down, or feathers, as well as synthetic blends, which all have different effects on the firmness, warmth, and airiness of a pillow. Cotton pillows are firmer, flatter, and less pliable, while down pillows are squishier and more easily molded. Both of these materials breathe better than wool, which is heavier, warmer, and provides a very firm support.
